The team
The Wildfire Data Portal is the result of collaboration between several multidisciplinary organisations. Its development has been made possible thanks to the contributions of the following organisations:
- Pau Costa Foundation: a global non-profit organisation based in Spain that focuses on wildfire management and prevention from the perspective of fire ecology at the international level.
- Contributing expertise: stakeholder engagement, project management, portal host and communication.
- Catalan Fire and Rescue Service: The public agency that carries out prevention and suppression of fires and rescue tasks in Catalonia, Spain. Participating in Wildfire Data Portal is their team of specialists called GRAF (Grup de Recolzament d’Actuacions Forestals, Forestry Action Support Group), which works on the prevention and management of wildfires. The CFRS contributes as a firefighting agency, a training provider, and an incident management expertise. They are recognised contributors to the improvement of wildfire analysis globally, and pioneers in the collection of atmospheric data on wildfires.
- Contributing expertise: fire analysis, data collection, wildfire management.
- Wageningen University & Research: participating in Wildfire Data Portal is its Meteorology and Air Quality Group, a team of researchers that study the atmosphere just above land and how it relates to life and the environment.
- Contributing expertise: fundamental an applied research, wildfire simulation, 3D modelling of atmospheric flow and wildfires.
- Netherlands Institute for Public Safety: a public institute focused on research, education, information and support that provides knowledge in the areas of contingency planning, crisis response and firefighting strategies to contribute to the safety and resilience of the Netherlands.
- Contributing expertise: research, data collection, training, cross-sector bridging.
- Hellenic Fire Service: the public agency for fire and rescue services in Greece. It participates in dealing with any emergency that arises in times of peace or war, in cooperation with the competent authorities and services, and contributes to ensuring the civil protection and civil defence of the country.
- Contributing expertise: fire analysis, data collection, firefighting, crisis management.
- Grenland Fire and Rescue Service: a public inter-municipal organisation that prevents and combats fires and other emergencies in five municipalities of the Grenland district, in Norway
- Contributing expertise: fire analysis, data collection, firefighting, Incident Command System.
Each fire service in the project brings valuable experience based on the region and ecosystem they operate in, from Norway’s boreal forests to the Mediterranean and central European landscapes. They have dealt with major wildfire events such as Santa Coloma, Junquera, and Torre Espanyol in Spain; Varnavas and Alexandroupolis in Greece; wind-driven fires in Norway; and notable incidents in the Netherlands. This hands-on experience is essential for strengthening collaboration and improving wildfire management.
